…and Witchy-woo has a WOW.
My dear friend Stormy has done something I’ve sometimes contemplated doing but never actually had the stomach for - she’s analysed the content of one days porn spam.
Visually, it’s a very attractive post - it’s got pie charts and bar graphs and everything. Contentwise though, it makes very disturbing reading in that it confirms things I knew to be true without actually ever having done the work. The whole post is a must-read - this is the conclusion:
So in summary, these are the ‘high points’ of porn, these are the things that punters want to see in their porn, these are the *good bits*. I saw no mention of ‘mutually satisfying consensual sex’, etc. Actually, the opposite. It was all about rape. It was all about domination (either of sex, race or age). It was all about force and violence. It was all ‘take’.
See, I kind of knew that just from reading the headers on the porn spam I get before deleting it but I’ve never done a count up let alone an analysis. Stormy is a self described ‘marketing type person’ who understands the intricacies of advertising and promotion and has applied her knowledge and skills in her post. Advertisers promote what the punters want. That makes perfect sense - they’d never sell anything otherwise. According to that one day’s porn spam analysis, what the punters want is to see sexual violence, sexual torture, sexualised domination and force all wrapped up in race, gender and age and presented to them as ‘entertainment’.

i have a question about stormy’s chart…and I know nothing about how this stuff works so I am not trying to be an ass, I am trying to learn something…
Stormy got a lot of spam dealing with rape/rascist/violent porn, I am wondering if due to things she discusses on her blogs (rape & violent porn) along with the recent “google bombing” thing (which I do not know if she particpated in or not, but I remember a lot of anti-porn/rad fem types were more or less ‘advertising’ rape porn and violent sex porn) might have in some way contributed to the content of her spam? Does anyone know how that works?
(after examining my own spam folder, I see there are many porn adverts-mostly of the gangbang variety but only three out of 213 that mention rape or ‘forced’ sex- and a lot of adverts for viagra and online casinos)

“Advertisers promote what the punters want.”
Exactly.
@RE. It is possible that my blog is content-targeted spam, because of the usual subject matter, highly possible.
However, I do recall that from the start of the spam that Akismet filtered, most was pornie.
I also recall before my email filtering, most was for porn, the remainder for viagra (to aid the porn, one wonders?) anyway, almost all ’sexual’ in one form or another. The minority of spam emails were the ‘help me get my gazillion bucks from nasty government’ or whatever.
Getting back to my blog spam, seems to work similar to the email ones - once one is on ‘the list’ one is forever targeted.
Although, this was in part a xmas special, spammed at twice the rate of even today or yesterday. Content of the last two days has pretty much followed the same lines as xmas day, with only one or two non-porn spams.
I did get a lot of casino spam a few weeks back, but nowhere near the volume of the porn spam of recent times. (7-10 per day was the peak)
I was thinking of putting the content of the spam into picture format (and putting into a Word doc or PDF), so as not to be picked up by the SEs, but I think the file size might be too large. I deleted the originals in the spam queue, but have the content pasted as text in a Word doc.

I get a lot of porn spam too - and quite a lot of it intimates sexual violence, teens or pre-teens and animals just in the title. And I get spam advertising viagra and other ‘medications’ but (so far) not enough casino spam worth noting.
Having just had a quick look at the first couple of pages of my Akismet catches I’d say the vast majority is porn.
Not a detailed analysis, I know, and not half as detailed as Stormy’s one day exercise but like I said, I really don’t have the stomach for anything like that.
I suppose there could be a google connection between the main focus of a blog and the element of porn spam it receives but I’m guessing it’s tenuous - if there is one. After all, an email address without a spam filter gets a deluge of unasked for porn spam every day, no matter who it belongs to.
Besides this blog I also run a radical feminist activist website where, as you can probably imagine, pornography and sexual violence get mentioned a great deal but the spam I get there is all “give us your bank details so we can share $50,000,000 with you” and hardly any porn spam at all.
So, if there is a connection, I don’t know what it is. Need someone a bit more web orientated than us lot so far to explain this kind of thing, it would seem.

I get no porn spam at all, not at my blog, not in my email.
I get pharmaceutical spam - viagra, vicodin, oxycontin, a mixed bag. also stock-market scam spam.
but absolutely no porn.

A Wiki article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_in_blogs
It does seem their main purpose is for SEO.
So far I could not find anything on content-targeted spam.
Interesting that the anti-porners seem to get the majority of porn in their spam, and the converse.
Witchy, BTW, thanks for the honour of being the last Wow for 2007. Cool!

“Interesting that the anti-porners seem to get the majority of porn in their spam, and the converse.”
yep. I don’t understand it either.

Antiprincess - neither do I. My blog gets a bunch of tarot card spam, a few “medication” spams and a million sales pitches “dream vacations cheap! “we’ll buy your house!” etc. But no porn spam at all.
Well, yet.

However, when looking at the keywords people searched under that lead to my blog: neocon hate speech (?), porn, xxx, britney’s crotch shots, rape, raped into submission, sluts, bitches, and - my personal favorite - wank material.
Some of them I understand, the rest I shudder to think how those led people to my blog.

Yes definitely one gets spam related to content. I get medical spam. But still, porn spam is by far the largest spam content, and they didn’t see your blog Stormy and decide to create a whole category just for you: rape, torture, force, degradation etc. The latest in the bukkake porn is tied up, neck blocks with screws, and plastic bags over her head so she can’t breathe. I wonder where they get the idea that is sex? Which leads me to the Viagra; it’s needed by the pornsters because they can’t get it up with real women, in real sex situations anymore without aid.

“I wonder where they get the idea that is sex? ”
Goodness Pony - you and I must have been sunjected to the same porn pages. I’m still disgusted and disturbed to the point where I’ve banished all other porn from my house. I can’t look at any of it anymore.
Which is perhaps “unfair”, but I don’t care. I see porn and I think of that one girl crying while being slapped across the face, and then that’s all I can see.
I’m done with it completely.

Yesterday I got
“14 and gagging for it”
Today I got
“12 and gagging for it”

Although the young women are not likely 14 or 12 the money is in the fantasy of a 12 or 14 year old servicing you. The only think stopping this is a very shaky law. Here in Canada, 14 is the age of consent for *some* sexual activity, with someone within X number of years of 14 (five I think), and provided it was consensual. Well ok, five yrs older than 14 is 19, and how do you tell me a 14 year old knows what she is consenting to?

Huh…I’ve never paid that much attention to spam, really. But I’m thinking that I get the same type of spam that antiprincess does.
Huh. Interesting. REally.

Hi i’m an 18 year old hetrosexual male and i totally agree with all of you “The latest in the bukkake porn is tied up, neck blocks with screws, and plastic bags over her head so she can’t breathe. I wonder where they get the idea that is sex?” i don’t look at porn at all and i have no idea what is meant by bukkake porn but to me what you have discribed here is not sex (cosentual, loving and equally pleasurable for both involved.)but humilliating, painful and degrading torture.
“I see porn and I think of that one girl crying while being slapped across the face, and then that’s all I can see.”This comment really upsets me because nobody cares enough to stop this from happening to her they are just filming her being hurt instead of trying to help her and are treating her as an object that they can use, abuse and humiliate rather than a person that deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, kindness and compassion.
I’d also like to say i don’t get any porn spam or that much spam of anything really but i’ve got 5 G.C.S.E’s in I.C.T and have also done courses in hardware and operating systems as well as web design and i know that spam is not usually directed specifically to words that are used on blogs or e-mail address’s although it can be; There are computer programes that are designed to seek out any online contact details store them until there is a large number of contact details then spam them all simultaneously with the spam they have been programed to spam you with i.e. porn spam hope that helps -Aaron
